The exception is players who have been drafted by an NHL team but have not signed their contract. If an NCAA player signs an NHL contract, he or she is no longer eligible to play in the league. The NHL is unable to provide college athletes with an opportunity to compete. In most cases, players will spend a few years honing their skills in junior hockey or the minor leagues before making the jump to the NHL. While it is possible to go directly from high school to the NHL, it is far from common. Prior to Abbott, the last player to make the jump directly from high school to the NHL was Mike Richards of the Philadelphia Flyers, who did so in 2003. The most recent example is Chicago Blackhawks forward Spencer Abbott, who was signed by the team in March of 2013 after a successful high school career. However, there have been a handful of players who have gone directly from high school to the NHL. Players who are drafted or signed by an NHL team are typically 19-20 years old. In North America, the National Hockey League (NHL) is the highest level of professional hockey.
